Angelica Sprocket’s Pockets, Sir Quentin Blake’s Outrageous Heroine come to East Riding Theatre

BEVERLEY – East Riding Theatre will host a new stage adaptation of Angelica Sprocket’s Pockets, the surreal and much-loved children’s book by Sir Quentin Blake, on Wednesday 16 April 2025. The production comes courtesy of Folksy Theatre, a company known for imaginative storytelling and bold interpretations of classic texts.

Angelica Sprocket’s Pockets tells the story of a woman whose coat is stuffed with an endless array of unexpected—and often absurd—items. From umbrellas and mice to underpants and machinery, Angelica’s ever-expanding pockets defy logic and embrace joyful nonsense. The original book, written and illustrated by Sir Quentin Blake, has become a staple of contemporary children’s literature since its release in 2010.

The theatre adaptation translates Blake’s chaotic humour and sketchy, energetic artwork into live performance, using a mix of physical theatre, original music and character-driven comedy. It’s a format that fits Folksy Theatre’s strengths: inventive, accessible productions designed to engage young audiences without talking down to them.

Folksy Theatre has built a national reputation for its open-air Shakespeare tours and vibrant children’s theatre. Their work often blurs the line between traditional storytelling and interactive performance, drawing on puppetry, music and movement to create an immersive experience. With Angelica Sprocket’s Pockets, they take on one of Blake’s most unpredictable characters—one whose appeal lies as much in her unflappable confidence as in the surrealism of her belongings.
