Beverley Rallies for VE Day with Red, White and Blue Spirit

As the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day approaches on 8 May 2025, Beverley is preparing to mark the occasion with a show of colour, community spirit and remembrance. The Beverley Chamber of Trade is calling on all businesses and residents to join in by decorating their shopfronts, homes and streets in red, white and blue.

The goal is simple: to transform the town into a vibrant, patriotic display that pays tribute to those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War. By coming together in this way, Beverley aims to honour history while strengthening the community ties that define the town.

Plans for local events are still being finalised, but Beverley is expected to host a variety of activities across the weekend to mark this historic milestone. The Chamber’s campaign for decorations is the first step in building momentum and ensuring the town is dressed for the occasion.

Deputy Chairman of the armed forces charity SSAFA East Yorkshire David Elvideg said “As we approach the 80th anniversary of VE Day it is a time when communities across the country can come together to remember the sacrifices of a generation that fought with their allies to stop the spread of facism. This will be a time to reflect and remember the horrors that so many endured and celebrate the end of hostilities in Europe and the dawning of peace and a chance to rebuild. Let us never forget those that know their history are less likely to repeat it.”

Elsewhere in the region, preparations are also underway. In Hull, a commemorative evening is being planned for 8 May, with live entertainment and historical displays expected to draw large crowds. At Carlton Towers, near Goole, a special VE Day tour and afternoon tea will take place on 9 May, offering a chance to step back in time and reflect on the war years in the setting of a stately home.

Back in Beverley, local businesses are already getting creative with window displays and themed bunting. The Chamber of Trade hopes that the whole town will embrace the opportunity—not just to remember the past, but to celebrate peace, unity and shared values.

As the nation prepares to commemorate one of the most significant anniversaries in living memory, Beverley is doing its part to ensure VE Day 2025 is marked with colour, dignity and pride. The call is clear: fly the flags, dress the town, and come together for a celebration that honours the past while bringing the community closer in the present.
