BEVERLEY – A small family-run business in Beverley town centre is offering something a little different from the usual café or shop.
The Game Shack, which opened in August 2024, is a tabletop gaming café run by Katherine and Andy. Based in the town centre, it gives people a place to play board games, card games, chess, scrabble and other tabletop games, with drinks and snacks available too.
The business says its aim is to provide a space where people can meet in person and spend time together away from screens. As well as casual gaming sessions, The Game Shack runs regular clubs for chess, scrabble and backgammon, alongside Dungeons and Dragons sessions and social deduction games including Blood on the Clocktower.
It also hosts murder mystery events, crime scene investigation detective events and jigsaw competitions.

Andy, one of the co-owners, has also created a number of bespoke games for the venue, including titles such as Zombies on the Westwood.
Since opening, the business says it has welcomed a range of local groups including cubs, scouts, guides, rangers, Beverley Tangent, The Out Crowd, Matthew’s Hub and home education groups. It has also visited local schools including Longcroft, Beverley Grammar and Molescroft Primary to introduce children to tabletop gaming.
The Game Shack is also involved in Beverley’s Festival of Words Spring Fest, where it is hosting Dungeons and Dragons and Blood on the Clocktower sessions.
The venue can also be hired for parties and events. It is open Thursday and Friday from 6pm to 9pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm, with sessions priced at £3 per person.

Before opening as The Game Shack, the owners renovated the building, which they say was originally built as a stable in 1870 and had fallen into a dilapidated condition.
