The new year is a perfect time to recognise the people who make Beverley a special place. Inspired by King Charles’ New Year Honours list, and just for fun, we asked the Beverley Facebook group: “If there was a Beverley New Year Honours list, who would you nominate?”
The response was overwhelming! From everyday heroes to tireless volunteers, from beloved businesses to quirky favourites, the nominations came flooding in. It’s clear that Beverley is full of incredible people making a difference. Here’s a round-up of those who were nominated—and why they deserve the spotlight.
Community Champions
Jo Ramsey, who leads the Beverley Cherry Tree Community Centre, was one of the most celebrated nominations. Jo has spent years at the heart of the community, helping children and families and creating a lifeline for those in need. Her work embodies everything that makes Beverley great.
David Elvidge, another local hero, was recognised for his tireless work as a councillor and campaigner. Born and bred in Beverley, David is a champion of community issues and always goes above and beyond to improve life for everyone.
Sports Heroes
Beverley’s sports scene thrives thanks to dedicated volunteers:
Stuart Akester was praised for his commitment to Beverley Town Football Club, where his hard work keeps the club running smoothly.
Ian Morrison, who devotes endless hours to Beverley Town Cricket Club, was also nominated for ensuring sports like cricket, tennis, squash, bowls, and football are accessible to all in the community.
Brightening Our Days
Some nominees stand out simply for the joy they bring to others:
Stephen from Asda was described as “relentlessly cheerful,” with many agreeing he makes every shopping trip that little bit brighter.
Nick Hedges, whose breathtaking photography of Beverley has captured the hearts of locals, was praised for his ability to showcase the town’s beauty—and for his love of cows, which brought a smile to many.
Keeping Beverley Beautiful
Beverley wouldn’t be the same without those who work to keep it clean and green:
The Beverley Wombles were rightfully celebrated for their dedication to litter-picking and ensuring the town stays spotless.
Sue from Beverley in Bloom was applauded for her role in creating stunning floral displays that brighten the town.
Preserving Our History
Rob Simson was recognised for sharing incredible photographs and stories of Beverley’s past. His work helps us remember cherished memories and appreciate the town’s history.
Charity Superstars
Rene James, aged 91, received heartfelt nominations for her decades of charity work. Her unwavering dedication and kindness have made her a true Beverley icon.
Pru Joy and the Beverley Bugs were mentioned for their incredible work supporting local families and children.
Local Businesses and Institutions
Beverley’s businesses and gathering spots were also celebrated:
The Dog and Duck pub was described as a true family-friendly institution that’s been a cornerstone of the town for years.
The Beverley Card Company received praise for its commitment to the local community and friendly service.
In a light-hearted mention, the tip was nominated for its “reliability and unwavering service,” even through toe-deep floods!
Unconventional Heroes
Some nominations were a bit more unusual, but they reflect the joy and humour that make Beverley special:
A trio of Golden Retrievers were honoured for the sheer happiness they bring to people just by being themselves.
The “invisible guy on Morrisons’ fish counter” received a playful nod for adding a touch of mystery to seafood shopping.
A Few More Local Legends
Mandy James was nominated for her years of dedication to charity work. One commenter even recalled how Mandy spent her own summer holidays running stalls for local causes. Her big heart and selflessness have left a lasting impression.
Ron Hill was recognised for his contributions to the Beverley-based CL & CGB group, earning a spot on the list for his commitment.
Sean Ross, who nominated Nick Hedges for his photography, was himself mentioned as someone who brightens the town with his humour and positivity.
The very admins of the group where we asked for nominations, known to all as ‘The Beverley group’ where thanked by many who possibly know the many hours and days it takes to run and moderate a large successful community group.
Ben Briggs received a nomination, although no further details were given—sometimes, just being yourself is enough to be appreciated!
A Town Full of Heart
What’s clear from all these nominations is that Beverley is full of incredible people—some well-known, others quietly making a difference in the background. Whether they’re brightening your day with a smile, keeping the town tidy, or tirelessly working for the community, these individuals remind us what makes Beverley such a wonderful place to live.
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this list and to the nominees themselves. You are the heart and soul of Beverley. Here’s to another year of kindness, dedication, and all the little moments that make our town so special.
