Parents, we all know the drill—every year, World Book Day rolls around, and suddenly, there’s a last-minute scramble to find the perfect costume. Whether it’s a beloved classic like Harry Potter or Matilda, or a more recent favorite, the pressure to buy a brand-new outfit for just one day can feel unavoidable. But this year, East Riding Libraries are offering a clever, cost-effective, and eco-friendly alternative: a costume swap!
Instead of heading to the shops, families can take part in a simple but brilliant exchange. Just donate any gently used children’s costumes at participating libraries, and in return, pick up a ‘new-to-you’ outfit for your child to wear on World Book Day. Not only does this cut down on waste, but it also helps parents save money while ensuring that every child gets to step into their favorite literary character’s shoes—without the hefty price tag.
Councillor Nick Coultish, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure, and tourism, is fully behind the initiative: “This is a fantastic idea for families looking to save money and make World Book Day more sustainable. We all know how quickly children grow out of costumes, so being able to pass them on to others while finding something new is a brilliant solution.”
And he’s right—children’s costumes are often worn just once before being discarded or forgotten at the back of the wardrobe. By swapping instead of shopping, families can extend the life of these outfits, making the most of what’s already out there rather than contributing to the cycle of waste. Plus, with World Book Day focused on fostering a love of reading, this initiative is a wonderful way to bring the community together and celebrate books in a more mindful way.
The swap is happening now at libraries across Beverley and beyond, so why not take part? It’s a simple and rewarding way to make World Book Day fun, affordable, and green.
Please note that East Riding Libraries have no responsibility for these costumes, and they are to be donated and taken at the parents/carers “consent”. East Riding Libraries cannot guarantee that everyone will find a suitable costume to swap. All donated costumes are checked by our branch staff for current EU fire safety labels.
Children who are not in a school setting and have not received a World Book Day voucher can also collect their free book vouchers from their local East Riding library.
