Fossil hunts near Hornsea return for Easter holidays

Hornsea- Families in East Yorkshire looking for an Easter holiday activity with a bit more substance than the usual soft play circuit may want to head to the beach instead.

Fossil Feet is bringing back its family fossil hunts near Hornsea over the break, offering children and adults the chance to learn how to spot fossils safely without needing to trek for miles or clamber under unstable cliffs.

The sessions are aimed at beginners and are built around a simple idea: fossil hunting is often much easier than people think. Rather than needing specialist tools or expert knowledge, organisers say many fossils are lying on the beach under people’s feet once they know what they are looking for.

The group says the hunts are family friendly, SEN friendly and kept deliberately small so that everyone has enough space and time. There is also an emphasis on keeping things practical and low pressure, with the appeal as much about getting out onto the beach as it is about what people might take home.

In a note promoting the events, organisers said they did not claim to be “experts, geologists or paleontologists” but described themselves as local people who know the beaches well and are passionate about helping children and adults learn how to find fossils safely.

The Easter dates are:

Tuesday 31 March, 10am to 12 noon
Wednesday 1 April, 10am to 12 noon

A session on Thursday 9 April is sold out, as is another on Friday 10 April. The 31 March date was also said to be close to full.
