Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine calling it ‘an unprovoked and appaling attack’. In a Facebook post, the former Trade Minister and now Boris Johnson’s trade envoy said that the governments support for Ukraine is unwavering.
As the casualties rise in a conflict that has already seen the bombing of both military and civilian targets, the MP described the action as an ‘appalling attack on a sovereign democratic state and its innocent Civilians’.
Yesterday Prime Minister Boris Johnson outlined further sanctions coordinated via the UK, US and G7 intended to place further pressure on President Vladimir Putin and impact the Russian economy. Western nations and others have been united in their condemnation of Mr Putin and in their support for strict economic sanctions. As fighting continues in neighbourhoods of Ukraine’s capital Kiev, Graham promised that the world will not ‘rest until the Kremlin pays the price for its actions and Ukraine’s sovereignty and safety are secured, through robust sanctions on Russia and neighbouring Belarus’ who have been assisting Russia in its actions.
In a later statement, Mr Stuart outlined some of the additional measures the Government are taking to help Ukraine including sending military support to the Polish border, exploiting the training of over 22,000 Ukrainian troops and providing defensive military aid directly to Ukraine.
Over the weekend many sporting events and public gatherings showed their support for the Ukrainian people by holding the countries flag. On Saturday a gathering was held in Hull to show solidarity and support to Ukraine and the MP signed off his message saying that his thoughts were with those affected by the crisis.
