Commissioner Welcomes Full Exoneration from ‘Politically Motivated’ Complaints

EAST RIDING – Humberside’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Jonathan Evison, has expressed his relief and frustration following the Independent Office for Police Conduct’s (IOPC) decision not to investigate complaints made against him, describing the allegations as politically motivated.

In October 2024, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) was informed that the Police and Crime Panel had received a complaint against Mr. Evison, which was subsequently referred to the IOPC for consideration. A second complaint followed in November, but after careful assessment, the IOPC determined that no formal investigation was necessary and has referred the matter back to the Police and Crime Panel.

Mr. Evison responded to the decision, stating, “During my tenure as Police and Crime Commissioner, I have consistently prioritised integrity and trust in all decision-making processes, adhering to due process and maintaining professionalism. It is disheartening that other parties involved have not upheld the same standards, leading to what has felt like a trial by media.”

The Commissioner also highlighted the impact of the complaints on himself, his staff, and his family, emphasizing his willingness to cooperate fully with the IOPC to demonstrate that all proper procedures had been followed. “I was fully prepared to cooperate with the IOPC to demonstrate that all procedures were followed thoroughly. I am relieved that the IOPC has concluded the complaints with a decision of No Further Action.”

Mr. Evison noted similarities between the complaints made against him and those against the former Chief Constable, suggesting concerns about how information has been shared between parties. While investigations into the former Chief Constable remain ongoing, Mr. Evison reaffirmed his commitment to supporting due process.

He strongly believes that the complaints against him were baseless and politically motivated. “I have always strongly believed the complaints submitted against me to be based on nothing more than hearsay and to be politically motivated. I am pleased to see that the IOPC has been able to see that there has been nothing of any substance to investigate.”

Despite the prolonged challenges, the Commissioner remains committed to his role, highlighting the continued success of Humberside Police. Under his leadership, the force has been recognised as the top-performing force in the country, with ongoing improvements in performance data since the PEEL inspection in October.

Looking ahead, Mr. Evison is determined to focus on enhancing community safety and delivering positive results for residents. “I want to focus now on the future, on continuing the positive results and more great work for our communities. I remain committed to enhancing community safety, which can now once again receive my full attention.”

The Commissioner’s exoneration reinforces his dedication to serving the people of Humberside with integrity, ensuring that the region’s police force remains among the best in the UK.
