BURTON CONSTABLE – One of Britain’s best-known historians is coming to East Yorkshire this November for a special evening exploring one of the great debates of Tudor history.
Dr David Starkey CBE will appear at Burton Constable Hall on Thursday 12 November for the inaugural Ivan and Elisabeth Hall Memorial Lecture.
Starkey’s lecture, Feuds, Facts and Fakery: Or was there a Tudor Revolution in Government after all?, will examine the long-running historical debate over how dramatically government changed under the Tudors. Burton Constable says the evening will draw on Starkey’s “insight, scholarship and wit” and will include an opportunity for questions from the audience.
The setting should suit the subject rather well. Burton Constable Hall, near Skirlaugh, is one of East Yorkshire’s great historic houses, making it an atmospheric place to spend an evening disappearing into the intrigues of Tudor government.
The event also marks the beginning of a new annual lecture series celebrating Ivan and Elisabeth Hall. Both played an important role in supporting John and Gay Chichester-Constable in their work to revive Burton Constable Hall and its collections, and the lectures have been established in recognition of their longstanding contribution.
Starkey is a historian and author particularly associated with Tudor history and the monarchy, and the opportunity to hear him tackle the subject in person should make this an appealing date for local history enthusiasts.
Doors open at 6.30pm, with the lecture and Q&A running from 7pm until 8pm. Tickets cost £30 per person and include a glass of wine or a non-alcoholic alternative.
