Hull’s much-loved Splash Boat at East Park is back in operation for the summer season, ready to thrill a new generation of riders over the bank holiday weekend and beyond. This unique piece of local heritage, one of only a handful of traditional water chutes still in use across the UK, continues to offer a nostalgic yet exhilarating experience.
Located in the heart of East Park — the city’s largest public park, spanning over 120 acres — the Splash Boat has been delighting visitors since 1929. Designed and built by Hull’s own engineers using equipment from the historic Wicksteed & Co., the ride has become a cherished feature of the park’s identity. Riders are pulled 22 feet into the air before plunging down a 100-foot track into Ferens Boating Lake, creating a dramatic splash that’s just as entertaining to watch as it is to experience.
After a major refurbishment completed in 2021 — with Hull City Council investing £250,000 to preserve the structure and bring it in line with modern safety standards — the Splash Boat is now operating on weekends, bank holidays, and daily during school holidays. Tickets are priced at £2 per ride.
East Park itself, established in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, offers much more than just the boat. It features a large boating lake, an animal education centre, and expansive play areas, making it a popular destination for families year-round.
While the Splash Boat is running, visitors should note that the splash pad remains closed for surface repairs this summer. Improvement work is also ongoing around the park, including upgrades to footpaths and signage, and vehicle access may be limited until mid-July.
Whether you’re reliving childhood memories or introducing the ride to someone for the first time, East Park’s Splash Boat remains one of Hull’s most distinctive summer attractions.
