NORTH BAR – The new publicans at one of Beverley’s oldest pubs say they want to make the Royal Standard a place where people don’t just come for a pint, but come together.
Paul and Deborah Perkins have taken over the Grade II listed pub on North Bar Within and say they are committed to putting down roots in Beverley. Their ambition is to rebuild the Royal Standard as a true community pub, with regular events and a warm welcome for both old faces and new.
Paul, who brings around 15 years’ experience in the licensed trade, said the couple had a clear vision for the pub.
“We are working hard to elevate the pub amongst the community and restore an element of pride into what we believe is a fantastic pub,” he said.
“I understand there has been a bit of upheaval previously, but we’re here to stay.”
For Deborah, the move is about becoming part of the town as much as running a business.
“I have lived in the UK for 20 years and am now looking to put down some roots,” she said.
“We’re committed to the pub and want this to be a place people can relax, socialise and enjoy their time.”
Those plans are already taking shape. Quiz nights, bingo, karaoke, discos and a darts team are all planned, alongside the cask ales and courtyard that have made the Royal Standard a favourite with many Beverley residents.
Sitting just inside the North Bar, the Royal Standard has been welcoming customers for generations. Like many traditional pubs, its success has always depended on more than what’s behind the bar. The best local pubs become part of the community, hosting celebrations, raising money for good causes and providing somewhere familiar to meet friends and neighbours.
Paul Hutchinson, Operations Manager at Punch Pubs & Co, believes the new publicans are well placed to do exactly that.
